About the race...

Primary Election Update: Sophia is going on to the general election this fall! Sophia was one of the three winners in the spring's Democratic primary. Not only did she win, but she won big with 4,062 votes -- more than any other Democrat or Republican candidate for County Council!

I am running for Monroe County Council-At-Large. What does that mean? First, a definition of the Monroe County Council, from the Council's website:

"[The] Monroe County Council:

Appropriates all funds for county use, adopts county budget, fixes county tax rate, and has exclusive power to borrow money for the county."

http://www.co.monroe.in.us/countycouncil/index.htm

As you can see, the council holds the county's "power of the purse." In this regard it has county-level powers similar to Congress' fiscal powers at the Federal level. By deciding how, where, and when your money should be spent, the council can influence the county's development and it can control how services are allocated. In other words, it has a tremendous amount of power and responsibility.

If you live in Monroe County and are registered to vote then, this fall, you will have the opportunity to vote for up to three (how many is your choice) at-large representatives. Each at-large representative represents all of Monroe County and anyone who is a registered voter anywhere in Monroe County can vote for the at-large representatives, including residents of Bloomington and the other towns in the county.

Voting is good for you, it's good for Monroe County, and it's good for our country. It doesn't take much time at all and by voting you're making your voice heard about what you think is best for yourself, your family, and your community. So get out there on Tuesday, November 2nd.
