| Travis supported To the editor: This is concerning the editorial entitled "Is gender an issue?" from Friday, Oct. 1. The author attempts to discredit Democratic county council candidate, Sophia Travis' press release, particularly concerning the subject of gender inequality in local government. In the author's haste to enlighten us, he/she failed to quote Sophia's press release accurately. Here is what the press release actually said: "Although women make up nearly 52 percent of the county's population, they make up just 20 percent of its elected policy-making officials." The author of the editorial in question conveniently omitted the modifier "policy-making" to present a skewed counterpoint. I encourage all of Monroe County to read Sophia's press releases and stances on issues for themselves at www.sophiaforcouncil.com. I also might add that pointing out the fact that Senator Vi Simpson is part Native American does not negate the reality that minorities are terribly under-represented in local government. Thank you, Sophia, and may you continue to stand up for occupational, racial and gender equality. Kenny Childers Harrodsburg |
