| Travis a shining light To the editor: When first I heard Sophia Travis speak publicly, I knew she would someday seek elected office. Getting to know her better, I now foresee a shining light on the county council. Sophia is a woman of integrity with excellent listening skills. In her successful musical career and in her charitable activities, Sophia has displayed exemplar tact and patience learned from her father, a career military diplomat. We seldom know the significant issues that will occur in future council terms. If we just elect those with similar backgrounds, we will miss the creative, new perspectives fostered by occupational, gender and ethnic diversity. We risk just getting the same responses to new problems and changed opportunities. The key question, therefore, is "what does a candidate value?" Sophia values protection of our environment for both economic development and quality of life. Sophia values citizen participation in government. Her commitment to diversity will produce greater innovation. Sophia values local businesses, the work of local musicians and artists, and appreciates the unique character these entrepreneurs bring to our community's quality of life. If you agree that one who holds these values will contribute to better local government, Sophia Travis is the choice for county council.
